    Intelligent Service Access

    What is ISA?

    Iskratel ISA (Intelligent service access) is a concept of network intelligence, distributed on access and aggregation nodes.

    Key ingredient to ISA is the awareness of individual service flows as close to end users as possible. With ISA, access and aggregation nodes are able to classify each packet to belong to specific service or application of a specific user. This way, these nodes act as distributed service-provisioning and policy-enforcement points.

    Guaranteed quality of service for each individual service session maximises the quality of experience of end users, and thus allows the providers to monetise their offer, protect their investment, and build new sustainable business models.

    Where is the catch of ISA?

    With ISA, the operators model the services on the logically centralised management system. Modelling the services with reusable profiles simplifies the management, reduces the complexity and operator's operating expenses. It enables a painless integration with operator’s existing OSS/BSS.

    Service profiles describe individual services and applications offered (and subsequently charged) to end users. Profiles can efficiently model "standard" triple-play services (like internet access or IPTV), virtual private network services, over-the-top applications, wholesale bitstream services, or operators' own managed cloud apps. A service profile includes all classification rules, service-related policies and actions per flow.

    By attaching service profiles to end users, the per-service rules and policies are installed on the access and aggregation nodes, enabling them to control the service sessions per user.

    What are the technical secrets of ISA?

    There are no secrets, really.

    SI3000 Lumia, Iskratel's flagship access and aggregation nodes use multi-core network processors in the data plane. This enables them to efficiently classify traffic into individual flows using predefined, profile-based classification rules on layers L1 to L4. Upon classification, SI3000 Lumia enforces per-flow QoS rules and service policies.

    As part of ISA, SI3000 Lumia also supports TAL (Transparent auto-logon) mechanisms for automated, zero-touch provisioning of services and applications, which allow operators to simplify end-to-end and mass provisioning, as well as to simply introduce new services and applications without increasing operating expenses.

    With service-flow awareness, SI3000 Lumia moves the network intelligence to the access layer, enabling network providers and service providers to efficiently control, manage and monitor all individual services and applications.

    Why should anyone care about ISA?

    A distributed model of service delivery moves intelligence and flow awareness closer to the end users, away from the more expensive centralised model. ISA greatly enhances service quality, network security and traffic management.

    ISA lets operators turn a dumb-pipe network into a value-added network.

    • By protecting edge and core from excess traffic it lets operators control the investment cycle and enables them to build a sustainable business model;
    • By efficient differentiation of services and applications it helps the operators to position their own value-added cloud apps against OTT, and to increase ARPU with personalisation of services;
    • With shorter, zero-touch provisioning and centralised management it increases productivity and reduces operating expenses.

    The service-centric approach of ISA allows easy integration with wholesale and open-access environments.

    SDN in access and aggregation networks with ISA?

    With ISA, Iskratel is the first solution provider to implement and deploy a true SDN (Software-defined network) application.

    • ISA decouples control-plane provisioning and data-flow processing.
    • ISA inherently supports SDN with high granularity of service flows (with L1 to L4 classification), flexibility of actions per flow, and transparent provisioning with an external controller.
    • ISA provides standard interfaces between access and aggregation nodes and the centralised management system (i.e. an SDN controller).
    • Open north- and southbound interfaces enable easy integration with OSS/BSS systems.

    ISA supports seamless integration and smooth migration to SDN. The network-processor based SI3000 Lumia is a base for a smooth transition to SDN. Deploying it, the operators find themselves on a safe, secure and profitable path to fully SDN-enabled service-delivery networks.

    ISA and SI3000 Lumia embody the optimal access and aggregation platform in a time when operators realise SDN may be the right direction, but are reluctant to just throw themselves out a tenth-story window.

    Open broadband access

    Iskratel’s open broadband access provides broadband-access customers with fair access to services, provided by different and usually competing service providers. All the service providers share the same network provider’s resources.

    To the customers, this open-access model gives a free choice of services and service providers. To indi­vidual service providers, it guarantees equal terms for their service offer to the end customers through the shared resources of a network provider.

    The model gives customers freedom of choice with regard to the services they take. While using voice services from one service provider, customers may use internet/data services from another, video services from the third one, and so on. Furthermore, customers may even collect services of the same kind from different SPs. In this way, customers minimize the costs of the services they use and/or improve the quality of their experience.

    But to ensure such a model, the role of the access equipment serving as just a "dumb pipe" no longer works. With our ISA (Intelligent Service Access) architecture, the providers are able to offer a free choice of services and enable the subscriber to freely choose between service and application providers with a guaranteed highest level of end experience.

    Every access node in the ISA architecture is service-flow aware, and represents the next-generation access intelligence concentrator. It performs several roles: it acts as a single service-provisioning and policy-enforcement point and as an end-user traffic aggregator.


    Iskratel open broadband access suit all scenarios where a multiple service offer from multiple service providers is granted to the end user. It is the next step for incumbents moving from an LLU operator to an open-network provider. It is the best solution for municipalities and communities enabling them to offer inhabitants choice of services.     • Simplified core: A simplified aggregation L2 and core L3 network – ISA reduces the need for sophisticated aggregation switches and edge-routing devices. While moving intelligence closer to the end user the service quality is raised and the service flow control is extended down into the user part of the network.
    • Service-flow awareness: The access nodes are service-flow aware and are therefore capable of responding to the current traffic flow and event pattern characteristics. QoS handling is ensured according to the network provider’s service policy.
    • Real-time service provisioning: A centralised management point within the ISA architecture enables fully automated service provisioning in real time, without any need for manual intervention. For the providers, such an approach decreases the operational costs, allows proper service accounting and dynamic policy enforcement, and service provisioning. To the end users, it gives the possibility to self-provision their services, including bandwidth-on-demand and quota-limited services.
